How it works

Three steps to the right answer

  1. 01

    Enter your postcode

We match it to your local government area, even where a postcode straddles two councils.

  2. 02

    Read your bin rules

Bin lid colours, hard rubbish process and green waste, in plain language, verified from the council.

  3. 03

    Act with confidence

Book hard rubbish, find your nearest tip, or get overflow help when something will not fit.

The colour code

What each lid is for

The lid colour is the fastest signal of where waste belongs. It is a national starting point, not the final word, so always confirm the accepted-item list on your own council page.

Common questions

Kerbside waste, answered

How do I find my council's bin rules?

Enter your postcode in the search at the top of the page. Kerbside opens the page for your council with its bin lid colours, hard rubbish process and green waste service, plus a link to the official council page.

What do the bin lid colours mean?

Australian Standard AS 4123 sets the national reference: red for general waste, yellow for recycling, green for garden or food organics, and purple for a separate glass bin. Councils still set their own accepted-item lists, so the council page comes first.

When is hard rubbish collected?

It depends on your council. Some run scheduled area collections a few times a year, others ask you to book a pickup online. Your council page on Kerbside explains which system applies and links to the booking page.

What if an item will not fit in the bin?

For bulky items outside the hard rubbish window, or loads a council will not take, a local skip bin or rubbish removal service can clear it. You can request one from your council page without any phone numbers to copy down.
